About me

I recently finished dayjobbing as a Fellow in Digital Culture at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London. My background is in media anthropology, politics and journalism as well as in the more visual arts (photography, painting, design). My work aims to combine critical anthropology/cultural studies with recent developments in information, cybernetic and digital theory, with a special focus on the practical and experimental sides of computing, digital and mobile media for artistic, social and commercial purposes. I am also increasingly fascinated by the complex notion of creativity: that is, what it means to think differently and how something new and/or innovative enters the world. Most of this is mediated via my interest in contemporary French philosophy and its applicability to questions especially around contemporary digital culture and tactical media globally. Besides this (and whenever I get time) I do practical media work to compensate for too much reading. I am a visual artist, photographer, film-maker and am increasingly interested in mixed digital media art. I have lived and worked in Finland, the UK, US, Belgium, India, Ethiopia and Tanzania.
